Oh yeah, Usually all God have their own holy places.. where there will be too neat, the place is called as Sacred Sanctum. Like wise, for Christians its Church.. for Muslims its Darga, for Sikhs its Golden Temple. But this Kasi is entirely a different one. Most special one is the people who are dead are brought in Kasi to do the funerals.
How did this come to practice?
If you would have watched Naan Kadavul movie in Tamil. You would have known about it. It discuss about the people at Kasi, who used to bless the dead bodies. If they bless, they won't be having the next generation, means there is no life after their blessing, you won't be born at all as human or whatever. They call themselves as Aham Brahmasmi. They themselves tell that they are not humans, they are Gods etc. Nice one ain't it?
There is also an another fact in brahmins that, if you do the funerals at Kasi there is no need to do Devasam for them. This is how this came into practice.
Ok! let me don't want to give a big lecture on it. See the pictures below taken at Kasi.

In those days, Kasi was good to see, only water was flowing but the above picture represents the Current Kasi. The river is Ganges.
